Attracting good quality franchisees tends to be more of a courtship, and like all good courtships needs to be initiated and managed sensitively.

Franchisees often have very different aspirations to somebody looking for a traditional job. A recent survey ( by Harris Carlton ) identified the most common motivation for becoming a franchisee was a strong desire to work independently from a boss ( interestingly the second most common motivation was to earn a good living ! ). There are of course other motivations such as doing something worthwhile in the community, being part of a wider team, and the availability of expertise from the franchisor, but it is essential that the franchisor’s proposition is carefully positioned and communicated to ensure it attracts not only the maximum quantity of potential franchisees, but more importantly the right quality.

Franchisees also typically undertake a considerably greater level of due diligence than their counterparts applying for a traditional job. This is understandable when you consider the initial setting up costs and franchise fees, which can be substantial. Add to this the fact that over ninety per cent of potential franchisees are doing nothing more than window shopping, and will never get to the point of signing a franchise agreement, it becomes absolutely vital that each potential franchisee’s motivation is examined, as well as their general suitability, and of course the availability of funding. Our database which is updated on a daily basis, has at any one time upwards of 20,000 opportunity seekers, is also a powerful marketing tool.

Harris Carlton handle all initial enquiries from any advertisements and/or database searches, and gently lead each potential franchisee through a two way educational / qualification process. The process is designed to give a franchisee all the information they require to make an informed decision. The process is at all times credible and supportive, and always mindful of the fact that buying a franchise for the first time is a life changing decision for many people. The process also provides hard evidence as to their suitability, as well as their availability of capital.

Costs

Each proposition is assessed and costed individually, however our charging model requires a modest monthly retainer to cover the costs of research, response handling and database management, however the majority of our fees are payable upon the appointment of a new franchisee.
